In 1557, the small church was devastated by a violent fire, which killed more than 50 people. It was rebuilt thanks to the interest of Ascanio Colonna and was builteven bigger. It had three naves supported by three pillars on each side and three chapels.
In 1613, San Carlo Borromeo was proclaimed patron saint. As time passed the small church was abandoned until it actually collapsed on 11th September 1747, killing one woman and injuring seven people, as well as destroying several houses.
The building was restructured and re-opened to the public in 1865 thanks to the interest of Archpriest GirolamoSciamplicotti.
