Rocca di Papa

Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo Church

It is the main church of Rocca di Papa and the construction work started in 1664 on the pre-existing Chiesa del Crocifisso of the 12th century.

Cardinal Girolamo Colonna initiated the work on the plans of Antonio del Grande, but due to the death of both men, the work was interrupted shortly after because of economical difficulties and only started again in 1731.

In 1806, an earthquake damaged the structure and as it was not repaired it collapsed in 1814 destroying several artistic works inside. In 1830, work began again through additional taxation and was opened in 1845. After serious damages caused by Second World War bombings it was once again rebuilt with a similar aspect as to the original one.

Inside it is possible to admire the figuration of the Madonna della Pietà by Pietro Labruzzi, an image of which the town is very devout; a painting of San Carlo Borromeo by Domenico Tojetti; the sculpture group representing la Pietà by Theodor Wilhelm Achtermann; the beautiful image of the Assunzione della Vergine (the Assumption of the Virgin) by Corrado Giaquinto (1703-1766).
