Marino

Mithraeum of Marino

The Mitreo di Marino (Mithraeum of Marino) is one of the three discovered so far in Italy. The frescoes illustrate the scene of tauroctony (the God Mithras slaying the sacred bull).

TEMPORARILY CLOSED.

The other two, the Barberini Mithraeum and the Mithraeum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, can be found respectively in Rome and Campania.

The Mithraeum of Marino was found casually in 1963 during extension work of a cellar in Via Borgo della Stazione.

The mysterious cult was dedicated to the Persian God Mithras and spread by merchants and soldiers to Rome and throughout Western Europe around the 1st century BC. The particularity of this cult was that God did not accept sacrificed offers and it was he himself who sacrificed a white bull to assure the safety of his followers and the fertility of the land.

The Mithraeum of Marino was built on a pre-existing cistern excavated in tuff rock with an entrance tunnel of 29 metres long and 3 metres wide. On the rear wall is the representation of the tauroctony with the God Mithras wearing oriental clothes (a star studded cloak, a Phrygian cap and trousers) is represented while slitting the throat of the white bull. A dog and snake are shown at the bottom, drinking the bull’s blood. On the side are the most significant episodes of the myth. The left hand representations are the Battle between Jupiter and Giants; Saturn lying down; Mithras born from a rock; Mithras riding a white bull. On the right, Mithras dragging the bull into the cave by its back legs; Mithras initiating the Sun to the mysteries; the two divinities shaking their right hands thus becoming allies; Mithras letting water come out from a rock.

This rare and well preserved Mithraic painting dates back to the second half of the 2nd century AD. In front of the painting, there is memorial stone with an inscription referring to the slaves that worked in the peperino quarries who were ancient followers of the sanctuary.
