The castle dominating the medieval borgo was erected in the 9th century by will of the Counts of Tusculum family. After their decline the building became property of the Monks of the Three Fountains and, over the centuries, of several noble families: Annibaldi, Colonna, Cenci, Frangipane, Braschi, Rospigliosi, Orsini and eventually was handed over to the Ruspoli family.
The castle, restructured during the Renaissance period by the architect Giuseppe Valadier, is structured around the cylindrical tower and surrounded by elevated gardens. Inside it still conserves ancient marble fragments and 18th century tempera paintings by Liborio Coccetti.
A private entity bought the castle in the 90s and starting great restoration work. Unfortunately, the Palace is not yet open to the public.
